This weekend saw the start of the racing season at Thirsk Racecourse and the season will start at nearby York Racecourse next month.
I can’t imagine why those big horses enjoy running round in circles so much. You wouldn’t catch us dogs doing that, would you? I think running through the woods chasing rabbits is much more fun!

Last week we had walkers staying with us here at Flamborough Rigg cottage, real walkers. Katie and I were playing in the garden when they walked up the drive carrying their back packs.
Sarah, Paul, Mary and Anthony were doing the Tabular Hills walk, all 48 miles from the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough to Helmsley in the middle of the North Yorkshire Moors. When they reach ...

I am curled up here on the window sill enjoying the sun while watching Phil mow the lawns here at The Hayloft, Flamborough Rigg cottage. Thank goodness for the double glazing blocking out the howling as he sings along to his ipod, I have such sensitive, beautiful ears! Humans have a hard life, if they were half as clever as us cats he would be sat with his feet up drinking coffee. It is all looking very nice but maybe I should sign him up for one of the courses with experts in the area, we could be playing that croquet on the lawns by the end of the summer. I will pop the details down and see if he takes the hint.

Here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage we are surrounded by a large field and at this time each year farmer Tim brings the tiny spring lambs and their mummys to live in the field. They are so cute and energetic, gambling about and bleating their little heads off. There is nothing I like more than laying here in the garden and watching them play. They are quite inquisitive, at times they will pluck up the courage to come right up to the fence and take a look at our guests, us dogs, that cat and the grumpy chickens. As soon as I bark hello off they bounce.

Hi, Katie here. I am not sure why you humans get so excited about seeing badgers, but I am told you do. The badgers I see from afar here in Cropton Forest are always so aloof and rude, they never want to play with me. But if you really insist on seeing some I believe those lovely people at the Forestry Commission know the prefect locations and will even guide you there.

It is nearly time for one of our favourite days out, the Pickering Game and Country Fair at Pickering show ground. It is great fun watching those lurchers, terriers and Gun dogs scurrying about while Katie and I concentrate on with the very important business of finding snacks, quality hoovering time!
It is a very popular place with lots of competitions and people showing their goods and funny animals. It is not everyday that we get to hang out with ferrets, pigs, birds of prey & giant horses. There are sheep as well but we get to see enough of t ...

Easter is coming up soon but I am trying not to mention it in front of Meg and Katie as those crazy dogs get so excited. Having said that they get excited by pretty much everything, they lack the finesse of us cats! Last year Kaite was so disappointed at not getting to go on the Easter egg hunt that Phil made it up to her and Meg by hiding doggie treats all over our garden at Flamborough Rigg Cottage for them to find. Please!

Every year NGS gardens across England and Wales open their gardens to the public to raise money. Most of the 3,600 gardens are privately owned. We just thought we would let you know which ones are closest to us here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage and when they will be open.

When I go and play in the forest I always find little snacks, can easily find somewhere cosy to curl up for a nap, if only Katie & Phil would let me and have no problem finding my way home to Flamborough Rigg cottage. I am glad to see that the rangers in Dalby forest are doing their bit to ensure humans have forest skills as good as me.
During May they are holding some fun but useful courses in < ...

While North Yorkshire has many miles of well marked hiking trails that you can navigate alone it is sometimes fascinating to explore with a local guide or expert who can point out those special features that you may otherwise have passed unnoticed. Here are just a few that you can join in May.

Katie and I don’t really like normal shopping but we love markets, especially farmers markets, as the scraps are always so tasty! We do our best to look extra cute and gorgeous in the hope the stall holders might treat us to a few tasty morsels. Phil says we are incorrigible.
Below are all the farmers markets in North Yorkshire. You might want to check they are still on before setting off so I have put the phone numbers and www (woof, woof, woof ?)

We had some new friends to walk with today, some children called Oliver, Jessica and Abigail and I had been sworn to secrecy about the adventure we had planned for them. Meg reckoned I would be sure let the cat out of the bag…..what does she mean, who put Payne in a bag?
We all set off with the grown ups from Flamborough Rigg Cottage through Cropton forest for a lovely walk. The children kept hiding from us thinking we wouldn’t find them but for great hunters like Meg and I it was no problem. As well as chasing children we also got to chase rabbits, lots of pheasants (he he!) and a couple of deer!

know Caroline and Philip are quite proud of our garden here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage, they call it their work in progress but it has lots of lovely established plants. I try and do my best by helping out with the digging, although they never seem very grateful for my efforts!
Our garden here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage is currently full of very pretty flowers such as: hellebores, primroses, tulips, magnolia stellata, rhododendrons, ribus, bluebells, camellia, daffodils and azeleas. ...

We have had some lovely clear, if a bit chilly, nights here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage as of late. When those the dizzy dogs have gone to sleep I often enjoy a quiet few hours in the garden looking up at the night sky. Sadly I don’t know what any of the stars are called but I may have found some local experts that can be of help.
The Scarborough and Ryedale Astronomical Society meet in Dalby ...

We have some lovely people staying in the Hayloft here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage at the moment…..they give Katie and I lots of lovely snacks, don’t tell Caroline.
We are always sad to see them head off down the drive on their very posh mountain bikes each morning, but they seem very excited. They come back each afternoon even muddier than Katie

We have just got back from a brilliant visit to the beach at Sandsend on the North Yorkshire coast.
It was my best day out ever as I have discovered something called, surfing! It is such a sunny day I thought I would take a dip as I was getting a bit warm chasing those seagulls. Meg wasn’t so enthusiastic; she is more of a beach and sunbathing girl. The water was a bit chilly but my lovely black coat kept me warm. I splashed around trying to get Meg wet and then Phil threw a stick for me to fetch way out to sea, I swam after it and the IT happene ...

Just given the low down on Whitby to our new friend Jake, a Springer Spaniel from somewhere called London. He is staying here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage B & B for a few days with his family. He talks a bit funny and seemed quite scared of the hens, the forest and the sheep to start with but he seems to be getting the hang of things now….maybe they are just smaller where he lives.

We knew something big must be happening in nearby Dalby Forest on 27th June 2009, now we have discovered what it is.
Paul Weller is playing in the forest that night; we’re looking forward to seeing the people who are already booking into our luxury Bed & Breakfast rooms. The Hayloft holiday cottage here at Flamborough Rigg is already booked up for the weekend. Seems I’m too young to remember him, but I’m sure I’d like him as people keep ...

Great excitement as the fab builders who did all the renovations to make our three Luxury Bed and Breakfast rooms at Flamborough Rigg Cottage and The Hayloft holiday cottage are back! Something about a new roof, but as they always made a fuss of us (and we know where they keep their sandwiches) let’s hope they’ll be here for a while. It’s only meant to be for a couple of weeks so I’d better get practicing my ‘sad eyes/nobody feeds me’ expression if it’s going to pay off…

Quite happily lying in a sunbeam (which we get a lot of in North Yorkshire no matter what people say!) when young Katie came along to taunt me – although safely out of range of my claws I notice. 'Why do you want to lie here all day doing nothing when you could be out with us?' She clearly knows nothing about cats – lying in the sun watching walkers and dogs amble through Cropton Forest and the North Yorkshire Moors is a cat’s idea of Heaven – not that anybody invites me to go out anyway. It appears that Katie, Phoebe and Meg had a special treat. They were taken for a walk around Pickering& ...

I keep hearing how good the ‘Farmer Brown’s’ Farm Made Vanilla Ice Cream is. Some great guests from Lincolnshire staying in The Hayloft here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage kindly brought some for us (seems they have cows and make it themselves.) Although there’s little chance of me ever getting to try some I’m hoping that they’ll come and see us again sometime anyway. The boys, Jack and Sam had seen our pictures on the internet, so at almost 12 years old it seems I’m sort of famous. They brought their dog Nellie too (which I found a bit confusing as she is like a ‘mini Katie’ and believe me, one of those at once is more than enough!)& ...

Hi there, it’s Phoebe here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage. My first try at this bloggy thing, please bear with me as at almost 13 all this new technology can get a bit much for me.
So far the New Year seems to have started as well as the last one ended, with lots of nice families staying here at Flamborough Rigg Cottage and in The Hayloft. They all seem to have enjoyed the lovely local walks and cycle rides whatever the weather. We’ve even shared our secret that the Forbidden F ...

A big day out for puppy dogs! After a happy hour tramping through Cropton Forest and chasing deer (Always chasing – never catching!!) our owners are taking us out in the car. (This is Katie writing as I’m sure you guessed – only I chase everything, my much older but very lovely sisters Phoebe and Meg are content to walk and sniff. Lots of sniffing!) We are being taken across Wheeledale moor, past some sort of Roman Road – which apparently goes through our garden too – to the beach at Sandsend. Looking forward to surfing. Phoebe may join me, Meg just goes for more sn ...
